What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are durable caps made of porcelain designed to cover or replace a tooth that has been weakened by decay or injury. Any damage to a tooth that is left untreated can lead to further decay and infection to the surrounding teeth and gums. A dental crown can be used to cover and protect the treated tooth and prevent the problem from spreading to other areas. In cases where decay has been allowed to proliferate, a crown can be attached to a dental implant to replace the entire structure of the tooth.

Candidates for Dental Crowns

Virtually anyone who has suffered damage to a tooth can be a suitable candidate for dental crowns. While smaller cavities can typically be treated with a filling, more extensive damage may require a larger restoration. Crowns are commonly used to protect the structure of a tooth after root canal treatment and for patients who have suffered accidental damage from an injury.

What to Expect from Treatment

After a thorough initial examination of your teeth and gums that includes digital images, Dr. Grisanti will clean the affected area. He may also need to modify the structure of your tooth to create a suitable bonding surface for your new dental crown.

Dr. Grisanti and his team understand that complete oral health is more than just the function of your bite.

Thanks to our state-of-the-art CEREC® machine, we can design and create your restoration here in our office. Based on digital, 3-D images, the machine will create your dental crown to fit precisely over your tooth, matching your natural bite and the shade of the surrounding teeth. Dr. Grisanti can then fit the crown over your tooth and fix it in place using a resin adhesive, also making any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and function.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dr. Grisanti and his team understand that complete oral health is more than just the function of your bite. When you feel self-conscious about your smile, you may miss out on important opportunities. However, dental crowns can help restore function to your teeth and confidence in your smile.
